Checkout
"A cantankerous elderly hermit, on her daily pilgrimage to the supermarket to scour the “reduced-to-clear” section, gets more than she bargained for when she finds herself trapped inside with a masked killer."
Checkout was created in collaboration with the NFTS and BBC Film at the Sean Connery Talent Lab.
'Checkout' is a laugh, gasp, and boke-out-loud comedy horror choc-full of eccentric characters, exploring themes of loneliness, misogyny, and survival. By placing an overlooked older woman centre stage, the film seeks to challenge stereotypes around age & gender while simultaneously offering an alternative, tongue & cheek view of the Scottish Highlands. By catapulting the audience into a dark comic world of discounted groceries, deranged killers and noughties popstars, our hope is to make a film that feels like a thrill ride that will have you holding your breath one minute and laughing your arse off the next.
We're really looking forward to bringing 'Checkout' to festivals. Mairead Hamilton is an amazing director who brings a real authentic sense of place and character; stories that are uniquely Scottish, that reflect the cultural richness of the nation, as well as its peculiarities and absurdities as well as bring proudly feminist, by placing messy, fierce and funny women centre stage (in a genre so often dominated by men!)
